IVAR laboratory
Overview
IVAR (Industrial Virtual and Augmented Reality Laboratory) is a laboratory of the TALTECH Institute of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, which focuses on the research of virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) and human-robot collaboration (HRI) technologies and their application to improve industrial processes. The laboratory develops VR/AR and mobile applications, providing support for both teaching and special solutions for the industrial and healthcare sectors.
Equipment and capabilities
The laboratory has a diverse technological capability:
- Virtual industrial robots (digital twins) – used to study human-robot collaboration and teleoperation
- Over 20 VR/AR headsets – different models (e.g. Apple Vision Pro, HTC Vive, Meta Quest, Rayban Meta, Microsoft HoloLens, etc.)
- Haptic devices – to create realistic tactile sensations in VR/AR applications
- Camera systems – to track movement and gestures
- Robot dog – to study mobility and autonomous systems
- Robot humanoid (coming summer 2025) – to develop human-like interaction and collaboration
In addition, the laboratory has the ability to link the physical production process with this digital twin and test autonomous systems and rehabilitation solutions.

Collaboration and projects
IVAR laboratory cooperates with various industrial companies and healthcare institutions and supports TalTech research projects. The laboratory's previous projects are related to the development of digital twins, the creation of virtual and augmented reality applications, smart workstation management and human-robot collaboration solutions.
