Thin coatings laboratory

Overview

The Thin Coatings Laboratory is a laboratory of the TALTECH Institute of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, which focuses on the production of coatings using PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) and CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) methods. The laboratory serves both research projects and companies. The laboratory also offers mechanical engineering design services.

Equipment and capabilities

The laboratory has the following equipment:

• Platit π-80 coating device – deposition of TiN, TiCN, TiAlN, TiAlCN, CrN, AlCrN mono- and multi-layer PVD coatings (coating thickness 1-5 microns)
• Protech PT-1600-4CPECVD – deposition of carbon coatings, thermal treatment of materials.

After coating, sandblasting, cleaning of parts and removal of old hard coatings are performed in the laboratory

Main areas of activity

- Research on hard and wear-resistant coatings
- Deposition of PVD hard coatings for corporate clients
- Equipment design
- Support for research and development projects
- Supervision of students
- Üliõpilaste juhendamine

Collaboration and projects

The laboratory cooperates with various industrial companies and supports TalTech research projects. Among the laboratory's previous projects are support for the development of an X-ray generator, development of 3D printing technology for the production of implants, and studies of wear mechanisms of diamond coatings.
