Finding a job or internship as a student can take time, especially if you have limited previous work experience. That is why it is useful to start gaining practical experience and learning about the job market already during your studies.

Gain practical experience during your studies

In addition to education, employers value practical skills and experience. Even if you do not yet have much formal work experience, your CV may already include many valuable experiences.

Practical experience can include, for example:

• projects completed as part of your courses, such as a company financial analysis, user interface design or a marketing project;
• involvement in a student organisation or student representative body;
• volunteering;
• summer schools, hackathons and other projects;
• startup events and entrepreneurial experience;
• personal projects related to your field of study.

An important step is to find a meaningful internship. A good internship gives you an opportunity to apply what you have learned, gain professional experience and build useful contacts. When choosing an internship, consider whether the company could be a potential future employer or whether the experience would strengthen your CV and support your future career.

How to find an internship or your first job?

1. Check internship and job portals regularly

Useful places to search for internship and job opportunities include:

• TalTech Career Portal – internship and job opportunities aimed specifically at TalTech students;
• Work in Estonia - Jobs that do not require Estonian
• CV Keskus;
• CV Online;
• LinkedIn Jobs;
• MeetFrank;
• Estonian Unemployment Insurance Fund;
• Oftet.

Also check the career pages of companies that interest you and follow them on LinkedIn. Not all internship and job opportunities are advertised on the major job portals.

2. Attend career events and talk to employers

TalTech organises different career fairs, career days and other career-related events throughout the year. These are a good opportunity to ask employers directly about internship and job opportunities and to start building contacts even before you begin actively applying.

For example:

• Võti Tulevikku – TalTech’s major career event, where you can meet a wide range of employers;
• IT-related career events;
• career fairs organised by the School of Business and Governance;
• career events organised by student councils and student organisations.

It is worth attending career events even if you are not actively looking for a job yet. Ask companies what kinds of interns and junior specialists they are looking for, which skills they value and when their internship recruitment periods begin.

3. Contact companies directly

If you already know where you would like to complete an internship or work, you do not always have to wait for a suitable vacancy to be advertised.

Check the company’s website to see:

• whether they have an internship programme;
• when internship applications open;
• whether they have a careers page or an option to submit your CV;
• who you could contact about internship or job opportunities.

You can also contact the company directly and briefly explain what you are studying, what kind of experience you are looking for and why you are interested in that particular company.

Create a strong CV and cover letter

Think of your CV as a way to showcase your skills and experience, not simply as a list of previous jobs.

If you have limited work experience, you can also include:

• course projects;
• internships;
• volunteer experience;
• work in student organisations;
• professional and technical skills;
• personal projects;
• achievements and responsibilities you have taken on in different activities.

Always tailor your CV and cover letter to the specific internship or job you are applying for and highlight the experience and skills that are most relevant to the employer.
