Tallinn University of Technology

Aim of the course:

The aim of this course is to develop learners’ understanding of the relationship between the built environment and climate change, with a particular focus on the carbon footprint of buildings throughout their life cycle. Participants will acquire the knowledge and practical skills needed to assess carbon emissions, apply relevant sustainability frameworks and regulations, and evaluate strategies for reducing the environmental impact of construction.

Target group:

Construction and architecture specialists.

Prerequisites:

Prior knowledge of construction, ≥ EQF level 5

Topics:

* Climate change and the environmental impact of the built environment.
* Building life cycle assessment (LCA) and carbon footprint methodologies.
* Carbon footprint calculation methods, emission factors, and sustainability regulations.
* Sustainable construction materials, circular economy principles, and circular renovation.
* Strategies for reducing carbon emissions through design, technology, procurement, and project management.
* Case studies and practical applications of low-carbon and sustainable buildings.

Study results:

1. Understands the relationship between the built environment and climate change, with a focus on carbon emissions.
2. Analyses the life cycle carbon footprint of buildings and evaluates the main sources of emissions from construction through to end-of-life.
3. Applies carbon footprint calculation methods and understands sustainability regulations, including the Paris Climate Agreement.
4. Understands the broader sustainability context, including overconsumption, health impacts, and the role of renewable energy.
5. Critically evaluates the impact of architectural competitions and public procurement practices on carbon emissions.
6. Compares international carbon footprint assessment methodologies and understands regional emission factors.
7. Analyses technologies for reducing the carbon intensity of construction materials.
8. Evaluates case studies and proposes sustainable solutions for reducing the carbon footprint of buildings.
9. Explains the environmental benefits of circular renovation and sustainable construction.
10. Formulates strategies for reducing carbon footprints in future projects and understands the importance of sustainability in public procurement.
