Call for Expressions of Interests
Professorship of Data Science
The Department of Software Science at the School of Information Technologies of Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) invites expressions of interest for a tenured Associate Professor in Machine Learning in Data Science.
Responsibilities include research and teaching, as well as the promotion of early-career scientists. The aim of the position is strengthening both the synergy and quality of the current research of TalTech in the area of data science, while significantly enhancing the capabilities of TalTech to cooperate with Estonian industry and public sphere by joint work, consultations and education. The emphasis is on increasing the capacity and competence in machine learning for data science, in a close cooperation with our existing groups.
We welcome candidates owning a PhD in Computer Science or related areas who are interested in joining an internationally renowned research environment in Estonia. A strong experience in teaching both undergraduate and graduate level is appreciated. Substantial research experience track record of conducting experiment-oriented data science research, strong knowledge of machine learning techniques and deep learning applications are expected, proven by top tier journal and conference publications (eg publishing in venues such as NIPS/NeurIPS, ICML, KDD, ECML/PKDD, ECAI/IJCAI and/or AAAI conferences and/or in the journals such as: Machine Learning, IEEE Transactions of Knowledge and Data Engineering, Neurocomputing, Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery). We value a proven ability to gain and lead cooperative research projects and to attract funding such as from the European research funding schemes.
The position is partially supported by a recently started project “Smarter use of data via machine learning” and has close ties to the Estonian Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence (EXAI), composed of groups from TalTech, Tartu University and AS Cybernetica. There is an additional funding for a postdoc position and at least two PhD positions available with the possibility to build up a separate research group.
We are the leading university of technology in Estonia, providing excellent working conditions in a lively scientific community. Estonia ranks as the number one country per number of startups, unicorns, and VC investments in Europe per capita, and Tallinn hosts most of the Estonia’s active start-up ecosystem. Since we have close connections to the government agencies, there is a good chance of making a significant impact to the rapid development of data economy in Estonia. Our HPC centre is developing rapidly, provides local resources for experimentation and additionally access to the resources of the LUMI supercomputer.
