Fish-AI

Project description: Fish-AI is a real-time automatic video-based fish monitoring system developed by TalTech that automates reporting in accordance with EU requirements and significantly reduces labor costs. The system is compatible with various underwater cameras, detects different water conditions, and is able to adapt to them.

Project objective: The objective of the FishTube AI project is to develop and commercialize a nextgeneration, realtime automated freshwater fish monitoring system that significantly reduces manual labour, data processing costs, and storage requirements across European monitoring sites. Through the development of federated learning models, embedded AI processing, advanced species/size/migration classifiers, userfriendly annotation tools, and a webbased camera management platform, the project aims to raise the technological and innovation readiness levels of TalTech’s existing fish monitoring technologies, enabling scalable, costefficient, and regulatorycompliant biodiversity monitoring aligned with EU Water Framework Directive requirements.

Project result: FishTube AI service will automate the EU’s Water Framework Directive mandated reporting on fish monitoring and it is directly associated with sustainable best practices for regulatory monitoring and reporting. Furthermore, the outputs of FishTube AI also support the Eels regulation, the Habitats Directive and Biodiversity Strategy for 2030.
