A cross-sectoral physical activity monitoring platform to support healthy ageing

Project description: AKTIIV is a cross-sector research and innovation project focused on strengthening Estonia’s capacity in movement health and supporting healthy ageing. As the population ages, maintaining mobility and physical function becomes increasingly important for preventing functional decline, supporting independent living, and reducing pressure on healthcare systems. However, objective assessment of everyday physical activity and functional mobility remains challenging outside laboratory environments. The project brings together expertise from academia, healthcare, and industry to advance the use of wearable inertial sensors for objective assessment of physical activity and functional mobility in real-world settings.

Project objective: The main objective of AKTIIV is to establish a sustainable cross-sectoral framework for movement-health research, innovation, and knowledge transfer in Estonia, while developing and validating a wearable movement-health monitoring approach for older adults. The project will integrate wearable sensors, longitudinal movement data, and movement-analysis methods to for objective assessment of physical activity and functional mobility in independently living older adults.

Project result: AKTIIV will create a reference dataset of movement behavior in independently living older adults and develop and validate analytical methods and algorithms for activity recognition, physical-activity assessment, mobility monitoring, and detection of changes over time. The project will also establish a stakeholder network, support knowledge transfer through workshops and education, and create a roadmap for long-term collaboration in movement health.
