For the first time, Estonia with TalTech's Department of Computer Systems is hosting the local stage of the International Microelectronics Olympiad, a worldwide student competition organised annually by Synopsys Armenia in cooperation with the IEEE Computer Society Test Technology Technical Council (TTTC). Now in its 21st edition, the Olympiad brings together young microelectronics talent from more than thirty countries on five continents.

The competition is held in two stages. The first stage takes place locally in each participating country in summer 2026. The national winner is sponsored to attend the international final in Yerevan, Armenia, in November 2026, where contestants tackle more creative and complex problems.
Who can participate?
Students under the age of 30 who are active in microelectronics related fields (chip design, semiconductor technology, Electronic Design Automation, and related areas). Students from any institution in Estonia are welcome, irrespective of degree level. Please bring your ID or passport with you!
Olympiad topics
- Digital IC Design and Testing
- Analog and Mixed Signal IC Design and Testing
- Semiconductor Devices and Technology
- Mathematical and Algorithmic Issues of EDA
Read and solve sample questions
Format of the first stage
Participants gather in a single classroom at TalTech, receive the test paper on site, and have one hour to complete the multiple choice section. Each correct answer scores one point. In the event of equal scores at the top, tied participants take a 30 minute tie-breaker test. The highest scoring student represents Estonia in the international final.
Why to take part?
- Measure your knowledge against the best young microelectronics talent worldwide
- An all-expenses-paid trip to the international final in Yerevan is on offer for the national winner
- Recognition by an international jury and the global chip design community
