The competitions of the TalTech Junior Researcher of the Year, TalTech Researcher of the Year, the and TalTech Research Article of the Year will be announced in the beginning of December.

In the competition of the Junior Researcher of the Year 2020, any member of TalTech teaching or research staff, who has been awarded PhD degree and was 35 years of age or less on 31.12.2019, can participate. In order to participate in the competition, the following shall be submitted to the Research Administration Office, no later than January 22, 2021:

  •  a motivated proposal
  •  additional materials at the discretion of the nominator of the candidate.

The candidate´s CV must be available in the public portal of the Estonian Research Information System (ETIS). The Junior Researcher of the Year candidate may be nominated by the junior researcher himself or herself, the supervisor of his or her doctoral thesis, the head of his or her structural unit or at least two members of TalTech membership by a joint application.

The Junior Researcher of the Year will be elected by the Committee for Research of the TalTech Senate based by the following criteria:

  • active participation in the research, including management of R&D projects or participation in R&D projects as the principal executor and outstanding research results and publication thereof
  • presentations at professional scientific forums
  • supervision of a doctoral student/students
  • involvement of pupils/students in R&D
  • research awards and acknowledgements
  • participation in organisation of research activities

In order to participate in the competition of the Researcher of the Year 2020, the following shall be submitted to the Research Administration Office, no later than January 22, 2021:

  • a motivated proposal
  • additional materials at the discretion of the nominator of the candidate.

A researcher of the year candidate may be nominated by the researcher himself or herself, the head of his or her structural unit or at least two members of TalTech membership by a joint application.

The researcher of the year will be elected by the Committee for Research of the TalTech Senate based on the following criteria:

  • management of R&D projects;
  • publication in high-level scientific journals and collections ;
  • presentations at professional scientific forums;
  • inventive activity;
  • introduction of research results;
  • effective supervision of doctoral thesis;
  • involvement of pupils/students in R&D;
  • research awards and acknowledgements;
  • popularisation of research results;
  • participation in organization of research activities.

The competition of the Research Article of the Year 2020 is announced in three fields of research:

  • engineering and technology
  • natural, exact and health sciences
  • social sciences and humanities

The councils of faculties may submit their membership´s research articles, which have been published 2018 or 2019, for the competition. Each faculty may submit for the competition the maximum of 2 research articles in each research field.

Competition materials shall be submitted to the Research Administration Office no later than January 13, 2021.

Research articles will be assessed by the expert committees based on the following criteria:

  • novelty of the research article in the theoretical or applied approach
  • the level of the scientific journal, where the article was published
  • the level of the conference, where the paper was read
  • relatedness of the results published in the article with the research topic/project/contract to be completed in TalTech.

Two articles of the year in the field of engineering and technology and one article of the year in other fields shall be elected. The results of the competitions shall be approved by the Rector. The Researcher of the Year, the Junior Researcher of the Year and the authors of the Research Article of the Year shall be awarded a certificate of honor at the festive meeting of the Anniversary of the Republic of Estonia.

The competitions for the Junior Researcher, Researcher, Research Article, Development and Lecturer of the Year have been held since 2006. The aim of the competitions is to acknowledge teaching, the skills to transfer knowledge and teach the subject, creativity, successful supervision, regular engagement in self-improvement, research and the related social activities and to increase the motivation to work and the need for achievement and to inform the public of implementation of the university's know-how in economic activities.
