You are welcome to the Department of Economics and Finance research seminar "Self-employment and macro-factors: Do they really matter?".

The seminar will take place on 23rd of August at 14:00 - 15:00 room SOC-413 and in MS Teams platform (link).

Presenter: Juan Carlos Cuestas Olivares (Universitat Jaume I; Department of Economics and Finance, TalTech)

Paper title: Self-employment and macro-factors: Do they really matter?
Juan Carlos Cuestas Olivares joint work with Ana Cuadros and Joan Antoni Martín-Montaner (Universitat Jaume I)

The aim of this paper is to analyse the main factors affecting self-employment in a panel of EU countries. Self-employment is key to boosting economic growth and reducing unemployment in countries where the latter has been traditionally high. Hence, using panel data at the country level, we estimate panel cointegrated relationships between the self-employment rate and variables such as education, government consumption, etc. distinguishing between nationals and foreign-born entrepreneurs. The results point to a different behavior of national vs foreign entrepreneurs with respect to the main determinants of the variable.

The public research seminars of the Department of Economics and Finance (DEF) at Tallinn University of Technology  usually take place on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month in online format, unless announced otherwise. The seminar will last one hour, presentation will last approximately 45 minutes followed by 15 minutes of discussion. The seminars are held in English. Questions about the seminar can be sent to the seminar coordinator Natalia Levenko: natalia.levenko@taltech.ee.
