Paper title: Self-employment and macro-factors: Do they really matter?
Juan Carlos Cuestas Olivares joint work with Ana Cuadros and Joan Antoni Martín-Montaner (Universitat Jaume I)

Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to analyse the main factors affecting self-employment in a panel of EU countries. Self-employment is key to boosting economic growth and reducing unemployment in countries where the latter has been traditionally high. Hence, using panel data at the country level, we estimate panel cointegrated relationships between the self-employment rate and variables such as education, government consumption, etc. distinguishing between nationals and foreign-born entrepreneurs. The results point to a different behavior of national vs foreign entrepreneurs with respect to the main determinants of the variable.
