In 2025, it will be 500 years since the publication of the first book in Estonian. That is why 2025 has been declared the Year of the Estonian Book. The celebrations will start on Estonian Literature Day, 30 January 2025, and will run until Mother Tongue Day (14 March) 2026. The patron of the Year of the Estonian Book is the President of the Republic of Estonia, Alar Karis.
To celebrate the Year of the Estonian Book, we will open the exhibition “The evolution of Estonian technical book” in the gallery of the TalTech Library on 30 January 2025 at 11.30 a.m. The exhibition is based on the collections of TalTech Library.
The exhibition features a selection of technical books from the collections of the Tallinn University of Technology Library. The oldest item is Wisika ehk õpetus loodud asjade issewisidest ja wäggedest, published in 1867. The selected books showcase the development of Estonian technical terminology and scientific language. A total of 104 books from different time periods have been chosen from the collections.
