Tallinn University of Technology

From 1 September to 1 November, the bookbinding exhibition “Twilight of the Teutonic Order” is open in the library’s 2nd floor reading area.

The inspiration for this exhibition by the Estonian Association of Designer Bookbinders is Juhan Kreem’s monograph Ordu sügis. Saksa ordu 16. sajandi Liivimaal (Eng. Twilight of the Order. Teutonic Order in the 16th century Livonia). The Teutonic Order ruled Livonia for over 300 years – the book examines the last decades of the Order’s power between the Middle Ages and the early modern period. The works on display express the artists’ vision of the age of the Teutonic Knights. You can see examples of binding with wooden boards, classical full-leather binding, French binding, and modern binding methods. Some works feature widely used elements in the Middle Ages – techniques like blind tooling with stamps and riveting. The exhibition features the association’s bookbinding and leather artists Tiia Eikholm, Rene Haljasmäe, Sirje Kriisa, Lennart Mänd, Kadri Paloveer, Maarja Roolaht, Tähti Roostalu, Dorel Sabre, Signe Taremaa, Tulvi-Hanneli Turo, and Tiiu Vijar.
