Following Maritime Cyber Security Centre Research Seminar, where Jouni Lappalainen, PhD, Head of the Finnish Hydrographic Office Finnish Transport and Communications Agency will be presenting on two topics of "Maritime Safety Culture: Insights from my doctoral thesis and recent studies" and "Digitalizing Nautical Charts: BSCD Reform and S-100 Implementation in Finland."

Introductory remarks by the speaker
Maritime safety and digital navigation are evolving rapidly, requiring continuous research and technological adaptation.
In the first part of this seminar, Dr. Jouni Lappalainen will explore the importance of maritime safety culture, drawing insights from his doctoral research and recent studies. His work examines organizational behavior, risk perception, and safety management practices—key factors in enhancing safety across the maritime sector.
The second part will focus on the ongoing digital transformation at the Finnish Hydrographic Office, where Dr. Lappalainen leads efforts in the BSCD fairway and nautical chart reform. This initiative replaces traditional mean water level-based maps with BSCD-based charts, improving navigational accuracy. Additionally, Finland is implementing IHO S-100 products and services, marking a significant step in the modernization of hydrographic data and digital navigation.
This seminar will provide valuable insights into how safety culture and hydrographic innovations contribute to a more efficient and secure maritime environment.
