Alexa came to Estonia from Ecuador to study law with a clear goal: to better understand the justice system and eventually become part of it herself. Now in her second year at TalTech School of Business and Governance, she says the programme has not only strengthened her legal knowledge, but also helped her develop practical skills, confidence, and a clearer vision of her future career in law.
Discovering Different Legal Systems
“My expectations were to learn about different legal systems across the European Union in a comparative way, while also gaining insight into how the law is applied in practice,” Alexa explains. Her first year at TalTech met those expectations. “It was a positive experience where I met people from all over the world, learned a great deal in introductory law courses, and found the classes engaging without becoming overwhelming.”
One of the biggest challenges, however, came from practical assignments. “We had to write our own legal solutions for cases. These tasks required not only understanding theory but also applying and interpreting the law, which can be demanding,” she says. Despite the challenges, Alexa says that she remains highly motivated to continue learning and developing her legal knowledge.
Developing Legal Knowledge and Practical Skills
So far, she has found criminal law and human rights the most interesting subjects. “I believe the programme has a unique teaching style that gives students a lot of freedom when working on assignments.” She also points out that the programme has significantly improved her language skills, particularly her English, as she has learnt to use more advanced and precise legal terminology.
Alongside legal knowledge, she has developed strong research skills and improved her time management, which has been especially valuable in her academic and personal life.
She says that the programme is closely connected to real-world legal practice. Students are given scenarios similar to those encountered in law firms or courts, as well as tasks reflecting the daily work of lawyers. ‘The programme has helped me to better understand what I want to do in the future and has confirmed that I want to work in a law-related field,’ she says.
She also points out that the curriculum includes topics related to business, entrepreneurship and IT. Nevertheless, she feels that she still has much to learn before entering the professional workforce.
Recommendations for Future Students
“Overall, I would describe my experience as positive. While there have been challenging moments, the classes are engaging and the professors are supportive,” Alexa says.
For anyone considering the programme, she recommends carefully reviewing the curriculum and taking advantage of the flexible schedule, whether by taking additional courses, pursuing internships, or gaining other practical experience.
