Deniece Melissa Aiken, an experienced international legal specialist with a distinguished background in maritime governance, will spearhead the integration of legal scholarship into the Maritime Academy’s research agenda, addressing the complex and evolving legal challenges within the maritime industry.
A Journey into Maritime Law
Deniece’s journey into maritime law began with a childhood dream of becoming a lawyer. “I always wanted to be a lawyer; it has been my dream since I was a child,” she recalls. Initially, her focus was on intellectual property law. However, her career took a pivotal turn when she joined a maritime institute’s board. The experience was transformative, opening her eyes to the complexities and excitement of the maritime world.

Her growing interest led her to pursue a master’s degree, and from there, her passion for maritime law continued to flourish culminating in a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) with a focus on Maritime Governance.
Reflecting on her career, Deniece highlights the invaluable experiences gained outside the classroom. “The most memorable moments have been the interactions and relationships I’ve built with people from diverse backgrounds around the world,” she shares. These experiences have significantly contributed to her personal and professional growth.
