Tallinn University of Technology

On February 11, the world marks the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. At the Estonian Maritime Academy, we honor the incredible women who dedicate their careers to pushing the boundaries of knowledge and innovation in maritime research.

Science is about curiosity, discovery, and shaping the future. Estonia, a small country with a strong maritime heritage, has always looked toward the sea as a source of opportunity and progress. Today, our female scientists are making waves in the fields of maritime transport, decarbonization, and technology, ensuring a sustainable and safer future for shipping.

From Childhood Dreams to Groundbreaking Research

Many great journeys begin with a simple dream. Imagine a young girl sketching ships on paper, captivated by the idea of maritime adventures. Years later, that same girl has grown into a woman leading ship design projects, turning childhood imagination into real-world innovation. This is the journey of countless women in science—where passion meets purpose.

Kristine, a researcher in maritime transport, shares her vision: "Estonia’s connection to the sea has shaped our history, economy, and future. Through science and innovation, we are making shipping more efficient, sustainable, and safe. To all women considering a career in science—let curiosity be your guide. The sea has always been a path to discovery. Let’s keep exploring."

Kadi, who works in the field of decarbonization, turns challenges into opportunities: "Through groundbreaking research, we are shaping a more sustainable maritime industry."

Kristin reminds us of the power of asking for what we want: "People often don't say what they want, and that's why they don't get it."

Inspirational Women, Limitless Possibilities

Women in science stand on the shoulders of those who paved the way before them. One such inspiration is Dr. Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga, former president of Latvia, who emphasized the transformative power of science in society. As she once said, "Science is empowering, liberating, and assertive. Its principles are profoundly democratic." Her words remind us that science belongs to everyone and that knowledge is a tool for progress.

As Marie Curie famously stated, "Nothing in life is to be feared; it is only to be understood." With this spirit, we encourage young women to explore, question, and innovate.

On this special day, let’s celebrate the women who drive maritime science forward. Their discoveries shape not only the industry but the world at large.

We wish you a happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science!
