Tallinn University of Technology

In the last weeks of November, 11 enthusiastic TalTech students and alumnus will tour six schools in small towns in Estonia as part of the "Geeks on Wheels" project to share knowledge and arouse interest in the field of technology among schoolchildren. They teach school students the basics of programming, cyber security and testing and share knowledge of the latest technology.

In the new round of Geeks on Wheels, students show young people the latest technologies, how to program, what happens behind the scenes of cyber security or the exciting world of software testing.

From November 22 to 29, students go to Aegviidu School, Tapa, Vändra, Kilingi-Nõmme and Tarvastu Gymnasium and Kuressaare Nooruse School.

According to the leader of the project, Lars Asi, the goal of the students is to show young people how school work can be made more interesting and easier with the help of various IT solutions. "Geeks on Wheels, taking place for the fourteenth time, wants to encourage students to learn more about technology and introduce them to the versatility of the IT world," said Asi. This project, which started in 2013, has reached 76 schools and approximately 8,000 students, he added.

Lars, who works as an IT developer at Glia, said that he tied his future to IT because he likes tinkering with things and solving problems, and he discovered while working that a big part of being a developer is interacting with people. "This skill has certainly helped in reaching school students, and although we couldn't go to schools for a few years due to the corona pandemic, now we are already looking forward to the new tour," said Asi.

In the new round, students show young people the latest technologies, how to program, what happens behind the scenes of cyber security or the exciting world of software testing. According to Lars Asi, by experimenting with devices with their own hands and discussing technology, students get a practical idea of how to integrate technology into their studies and connect their future more with the IT field.

Geeks on Wheels is an initiative initiated by the Microsoft Student Partner program in 2013, where students from various universities visit small schools in Estonia in autumn and spring to arouse students' interest in technology and share knowledge and enthusiasm about this exciting field. The sponsors of this year's student venture are Nissan, TalTech, Euronics and Glia.
