On October 28, 2024, students of the Marketing Communication course from the Business curriculum visited Riigikogu. The visit was hosted by Riigikogu member Raimond Kaljulaid, who discussed political communication, the media interactions of public figures, and, of course, introduced the power corridors of Toompea.
To start, the group climbed to the top of the Pikk Hermann Tower, as the students from TalTech are certainly not indifferent to the flag waving there. Afterwards, they toured the Riigikogu session hall and the power corridors of Toompea. For example, the corridors intersect in such a way that it is impossible for a representative to leave the session hall without crossing this junction, where journalists often stand in anticipation of sharp interviews.
Riigikogu member Raimond Kaljulaid hosted the students and conducted a seminar on Political Communication. He also introduced public communication and crisis communication.
In addition to seeing interesting places, the students learned some useful insights. According to student Oliver Peenema, it was a beneficial visit: "The visit to Riigikogu was educational, offered beautiful views from the top of the Pikk Hermann Tower, and broadened our horizons. Raimond Kaljulaid's infectious enthusiasm and joy brought smiles to the participants' faces. He was also more than willing to answer all kinds of questions. I learned that long-term experience in one's field is highly valued in politics, which is why young people are rarely seen in political positions. An interesting fact is that dozens of scandals (including political ones) have occurred over the years, but they are quickly forgotten. Who knows whether that is ultimately good or bad."
According to guest lecturer Piret Pert, being aware of current issues is useful, if not essential, in the job market. "Media coverage affects people's consumption habits and consumer confidence. A marketer should be aware of what is happening in society to understand consumer behavior and, more broadly, the behavior of citizens. Political communication is directly related to this, as in a democratic state governed by the rule of law, politicians shape the regulatory environment. Getting firsthand information about how public discussions in the media are formed and consciously shaped is valuable knowledge. I hope that the students have gained new insights," added Pert.
In the course TMM2460 Marketing Communication, students learn various skills, including public communication through both social media and traditional media. They also learn how a business leader's media partner, journalism, and the specifics of political communication work.
The visit was organized by guest lecturer Piret Pert. The overview was provided by senior lecturer René Arvola.
