Ahead of Estonia’s Independence Day, President Alar Karis awarded state decorations to individuals whose dedication and professional contributions have played an important role in the development of Estonia. Among the recipients are researchers, academic staff, alumni and cultural contributors associated with Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech).
The Order of the National Coat of Arms, Third Class, was awarded to Tarmo Soomere, an academician, promoter of scientific life and Professor at Tallinn University of Technology. The honour recognises his long-standing and outstanding contribution to the advancement of Estonian science and to strengthening the role of science in society.
The Order of the White Star, Third Class, was awarded to:
- Tiina Randma-Liiv, social scientist, academician, Professor at Tallinn University of Technology and member of the university council, for her contribution to the development of social sciences, public administration and policy-making;
- Erik Puura, Vice-Rector for Entrepreneurship, geologist and promoter of science and education, for his contribution to the advancement of environmental and earth sciences.
The Order of the White Star, Fourth Class, was awarded to Vello Tõugu, Vice-Dean for Academic Affairs at the School of Science and biochemist, for his contribution to scientific research and the development of scientific thought.
The Order of the White Star, Fifth Class, was awarded to:
- Avo Ots, engineering scientist and visiting lecturer at TalTech, for his contribution to the development of telecommunications and engineering sciences;
- Marina Kuznetsova, folk dance instructor of TalTech’s Kuljus ensemble, in recognition of her long-term contribution to the promotion of dance culture and Estonian folk culture.
The Order of the Cross of the Eagle, Fourth Class, was awarded to Toomas Luman, promoter of national defence and colonel (reserve). He is TalTech’s Alumnus of the Year (1999), and the honour recognises his contribution to strengthening Estonia’s national defence and security.
Other recipients of state decorations also include individuals associated with Tallinn University of Technology. An updated list will be published once all official information has been finalised.
The state decorations will be formally presented around Estonia’s Independence Day at Kadriorg.
