On April 29–30, 2025, the international maritime professional organisation The Nautical Institute carried out a re-audit of the Dynamic Positioning (DP) Centre at TalTech Estonian Maritime Academy. The aim of the audit was to ensure the centre’s compliance with the updated standards set for 2025.
The DP Centre was first accredited by The Nautical Institute in November 2021 and is part of the network of accredited training centres offering courses under the industry-recognised DP Operator certification scheme. This international qualification system has been in place since the 1980s and enables individuals to obtain the Dynamic Positioning Operator (DPO) certificate.

The re-audit covered the following three main courses:
- DP Induction Course
- DP Simulator Course (Advanced)
- DP Revalidation / Refresher and Competency Assessment Course (a new requirement introduced in 2024)
The audit was conducted in parallel with a DP Induction Course held from April 28 to May 1, with three participants from Estonia and Canada. Special attention was given to the centre’s capability to deliver the Revalidation / Refresher and Competency Assessment Course, which became mandatory in 2024.
Under the revised requirements, all DP Operators and DP Vessel Maintainers must provide proof of continuing professional development and operational experience in order to renew their certificates. Individuals with at least 30 days of DP sea time are required to complete the DP Refresher Course, while those with less than 30 days or no DP sea time must complete the DP Revalidation Course. Both groups now participate in a unified, jointly delivered course.
The audit also included an assessment of the simulation facilities and technical equipment to ensure compliance with the standards.
Following a successful audit, the Estonian Maritime Academy continues as an accredited training centre, offering both existing and newly introduced courses. The Academy remains committed to developing its training programmes in line with international requirements and evolving industry standards, thereby supporting a safe and competency-based DP working environment.
