Tallinn University of Technology

The obligation of the teaching staff to participate in didactic self-improvement within 6 ECTS during the attestation period has been in force in the organisation of academic careers for some time. The wording valid until recently indicated that the required amount of training must be completed during the attestation period. However, training sessions may not be the most beneficial form of self-improvement at different stages of a career. Therefore, in the previous academic year, the Committee for Academic Affairs approved the specified principles of didactic self-improvement.

Of course, training sessions will continue to be taken into account as self-improvement, but they do not have to be taken only from our university, other in-service training opportunities in didactics are also suitable. The training sessions provide important input for updating the study process, but it takes time and effort to apply what you have learned and to make changes. If you want to change your current teaching practice, these activities can be presented as self-development. The university values collective activity in the field of teaching, and in this light, learning from colleagues in various forms is also an important part of self-development.

The teaching staff's development portfolio is becoming increasingly important. If the completion of training sessions is usually easy to prove, then it may not be as easy in the case of self-improvement. In this case, the significance of the portfolio grows, because it allows you to document various aspects of self-improvement. The attestation committee must then assess, on the basis of the portfolio, whether self-improvement has been reflected in sufficient detail. You can always ask for advice on issues related to the development portfolio from the Didactic Centre.
