On Tuesday, 14 November, 394 players (86 teams) gathered in the great hall of TalTech for the Rector’s Cup Quiz Night, setting a new record for the greatest number of participants in a quiz in Estonia ever. The team Sandra Sõbrad (Siim Sõber and Robert Kirillov + 3) achieved the highest score at this stage of the Rector’s Cup, supported by Swedbank, although they participated without competing with others. The official winners were an all-female student team from the School of Business and Governance called Need Segased (Maria-Elise Taggu, Karin Rosenberg, Carmen Sinisoo, Emilia Jablokova).
The team of Rector Land, Raskekahurvägi, also participated in the competition (Rector Tiit Land, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Hendrik Voll, Vice-Rector for Entrepreneurship Erik Puura, Vice-Rector for Research Tiit Lukk, Chief Financial Officer Madis Margus), but they held themselves back a bit to allow students to place a little better.
Silver went to the team Rohepöörajad, which consisted of the following well-known representatives of the School of Business and Governance: Eliis Salm (early stage researcher at the Department of Business Administration), René Arvola (lecturer at the Department of Business Administration), Mari Avarmaa (Dean of the School of Business and Governance), and Tairi Rõõm (professor at the Department of Economics and Finance). In addition, Rohepöörajad had managed to recruit Igor Habal, a several-time quiz champion of Estonia.
Bronze was won by the team Korjuse Elustaja #2, consisting of students from the School of Science (Karl Kallaste, Ander Mägi, Daniel Nurme, Aileen Umal, Kristjan Pals).
According to Jaan Allik, the quiz master who led the event, the quiz night in the great hall of TalTech definitely had the largest number of participants of all time in Estonia. ‘If anyone dares to suggest otherwise, I would like to challenge them to prove it,’ Allik commented on his social media account. Indeed, 394 participants are actually recorded in the list of participants, supported further by an infinite amount of photographic and video evidence.
The best teams of the quiz night were awarded many excellent prizes. The team that placed last received an award from Swedbank. In addition, two pairs of wireless JBL headphones were raffled between all participants.
