Launched 1.5 years ago, REISFER is a cross-border initiative focused on reducing emissions through electrification, technical upgrades, and operational innovations on selected ferry routes in Estonia, Finland, Åland Islands, and Sweden.

The REISFER project, funded through the Interreg Central Baltic programme, has reached its halfway milestone with results that already surpass initial expectations. Originally aiming for a 10 – 20% reduction in CO2 emissions from island ferry transport, the project is now on course to exceed these targets.

M/S Silverö goes fully electric

The standout achievement so far is the full electrification of M/S Silverö, operated by Blidösundsbolaget in Sweden. Replacing diesel engines with electric propulsion marks a major leap toward cleaner, quieter, and more sustainable ferry transport. Powered by renewable energy, the vessel’s emission reductions already exceed REISFER’s original goals.

Real-Time monitoring and smart upgrades

Across all participating regions, several vessels have been equipped with energy monitoring systems, enabling crews to track fuel consumption in real time, make immediate adjustments, and develop long-term energy-saving strategies.
Additional pilot activities currently underway include, but are not limited to:
•    Transitioning to LED lighting and efficient HVAC systems
•    Hull maintenance through blasting and painting to reduce drag
•    Exploring route optimization and alternative transport solutions

Rethinking routes and resources

REISFER also investigates non-technical solutions to reduce emissions. One study explored an alternative route to Estonia’s Kihnu Island, revealing potential environmental benefits and improved navigational safety, despite a longer financial payback period.

Building knowledge and networks

To support long-term change, REISFER is conducting four supporting studies on ferry market dynamics, business environments, and stakeholder perceptions. The first study has already mapped the status-quo and trends in ownership, financing, procurement criteria and contract durations across the Central Baltic region.
True to its slogan, “Sharing knowledge is in the heart of REISFER,” the project has established a network of ferry owners and operators, hosted joint meetings with external experts, and organized international conferences. The second REISFER Island Ferry Summit is scheduled for April 2026 in Stockholm.
