What sets an internship apart, one that truly develops and enriches? At ABB, it is designed as more than a first work experience. Through mentorship, structured learning sessions, networking, and events, interns gain a broad understanding of how a global technology company operates — from people and processes to real-world product applications.
“For us, it is important that interns are not just observers, but understand what they do, why they do it, and how it connects to the bigger picture,” says Emili Järv, Coordinator of ABB’s Summer Internship Program.
This year, ABB is offering 17 paid internship positions.
One of the key strengths of ABB’s internship program is the broad understanding it provides. While processes often remain theoretical in the classroom, during the internship, they become visible and tangible. Interns are not limited to their individual tasks; they gain insight into the wider operational context.
During the program, interns are introduced to different areas of the business, including product development, manufacturing, quality management, logistics, procurement, and other critical functions. This is supported by a structured series of twelve 30-minute learning sessions, where business leaders and experts explain the challenges their teams solve daily, how their work connects across functions, and what skills are required in these roles. As a result, interns develop a clear and practical understanding of what different functions involve and how these align with their potential career paths. In addition to technical topics, the program also addresses career development and professional networking.
Becoming Part of the Team
An essential part of the internship experience is the environment interns join. At ABB, interns are treated as team members, not temporary support. They are given meaningful responsibilities with real impact, and their development is actively supported through mentorship and regular feedback.
“While the program provides a broad overview of how the company operates, its core is meaningful, hands-on work. Interns are active contributors who solve real challenges and learn through practical experience,” Emili Järv emphasizes.
A strong intern community also develops throughout the program. Shared sessions and events create opportunities to connect with peers as well as employees across different functions. This network is not just part of the internship: it often becomes a lasting professional asset.
“We want interns to feel part of the ABB team: a place where it is safe to ask questions, experiment, and grow,” Järv adds.
