Tallinn University of Technology

The board of the Estonian Academy of Sciences announced that 12 researchers will apply for three new academy positions this autumn, including four professors from Tallinn University of Technology.

From TalTech, Maarja Grossberg-Kuusk, tenured full professor of the Institute of Materials and Environmental Technology, and Ivo Fridolin, tenured full professor of the Institute of Health Technologies, are applying to become academicians in the field of technical sciences. Their competitor is Professor Alvo Aabloo of the Institute of Technology of the University of Tartu.

In the field of biomedicine, TalTech's candidates are Tõnis Timmusk, tenured full professor of the Institute of Chemistry and Biotechnology, and Margus Viigimaa, tenured full professor of the Institute of Health Technologies (see attached photo gallery). Other candidates in the same field are from the University of Tartu.

This year's selection is characterized by versatility

The president of the Academy, Tarmo Soomere, emphasized that the selection of disciplines opened this year reflects versatility. "The academy is only as strong as are its members and the science they do and how well they all together cover the needs of top science in the world and the needs of Estonia. In addition to classical natural sciences, the Estonian Academy of Sciences also combines technical sciences, medical science, agricultural science, social sciences and humanities, and outstanding creative people.

The selection will be made on December 6

All candidates will introduce themselves at the conference on October 24, which will be broadcast live on the academy's website.

Academicians will make a choice from among the candidates at the general assembly of the Estonian Academy of Sciences on December 6. In order to be elected as an academician, it is necessary to receive 2/3 of the votes of the academicians participating in the general assembly.
