Tallinn University of Technology

On 29 May, Swedbank presents: TalTech 10 km Run will once again take place, bringing hundreds of runners and walkers to the TalTech campus. It is not merely a sporting competition, but a community-focused movement event where everyone can participate in a way and at a pace that suits them.

Although there are still several months to go until the event, now is the ideal time to begin preparing – both for those planning to run and for those who will take on the course by walking. Scientific research clearly shows that regular physical activity, especially outdoors, provides significant benefits for both physical health and mental well-being.

Physical Activity as an Investment in Yourself

According to the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), adults should engage in at least 150–300 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week. Both running and brisk walking are excellent ways to meet this recommendation, and their benefits are wide-ranging:

  • Improved cardiovascular health – regular physical activity helps lower blood pressure, improves circulation, and reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases;
  • A stronger musculoskeletal system – gradually increasing physical load strengthens muscles, bones, and joints, helping to prevent injuries and chronic conditions;
  • Improved metabolism and weight management – physical activity supports energy balance and helps maintain or achieve a healthy body weight.

It is important to emphasize that walking is also a highly effective, evidence-based form of physical activity. Research shows that regular brisk walking significantly reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes and is well suited to people of all ages and fitness levels.

Fresh air and mental well-being

The benefits of physical activity extend beyond the body. Research has shown that exercising outdoors:

  • reduces stress and anxiety;
  • improves mood and concentration;
  • supports mental resilience and creativity;
  • helps alleviate symptoms of mental fatigue and burnout.

In an academic environment, where mental workload is often high, regular physical activity is one of the simplest and most effective ways to find and maintain mental balance.

Why Start Preparing Already Now?

A preparation period lasting several months is not intended only for athletes. On the contrary, the calmer and more consistent the start, the greater the benefits and the lower the risk of injury—especially for those who are not very physically active on a daily basis.

The benefits of starting early include:

  • the body gradually adapts to physical load;
  • overall endurance and well-being improve;
  • physical activity becomes a natural part of everyday routine;
  • motivation and confidence to take part in the event increase.

For walkers, starting early also provides an opportunity to develop a regular movement habit and to enjoy the event without pressure—simply for the sake of good health and the joy of moving.

TalTech 10K is, above all, an experience rather than just a distance or a number on a stopwatch. It is a moment when everyday routines pause and you can take time for yourself—moving at your own pace, in the fresh air, and in good company. On the course, colleagues, fellow students, families, and friends come together, alongside experienced runners and those taking a more relaxed approach. It is a day that celebrates health, spring, and moving together on the TalTech campus and along the beautiful trails of Mustamäe and Nõmme.

Whether your goal is to compete for victory, complete the full 10 km running or walking, or simply take your first step toward a more active lifestyle, the best time to start is now.

We’ll see you on 29 May!
