On Sunday, September 7, at 11:00 AM, the third international chess blitz tournament, TalTech Blitz, will begin at the university's assembly hall. The blitz tournament is part of the Tallinn Chess Festival.
Estonia’s top players have promised to attend: grandmasters Jaan Ehlvest, Kaido Külaots, Meelis Kanep, and Aleksandr Volodin (a TalTech alumnus). The tournament will also feature international grandmasters from France, Sweden, Spain, Germany, Finland, Armenia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland.
As of today, 100 players have announced their participation. One of them is the tournament's organizer, Igor Krupenski, a PhD in thermal engineering, who states that both engineering thinking and strategic intellectual effort are highly valued at TalTech and its chess club. "Chess unites different generations and nations, bringing students, alumni, and international grandmasters together at the university."
Krupenski himself is a candidate master in chess and a former Estonian junior champion. "Nowadays, I'm more of an amateur, but I challenge myself almost daily by playing against opponents from all over the world online. Chess has helped me a lot in life—it has taught me systematic and strategic thinking and patience, which are useful in both engineering and everyday life."
