The TalTech School of Business and Governance is marking its 85th anniversary this week. Over the years, the school has had bases on Kohtu Street, in Kopli and, since 2009, on Akadeemia tee in Mustamäe. It has been led by 11 deans, and the ways in which people study, teach and conduct research have evolved. What has remained constant is the School's commitment to creating and sharing knowledge, and to educating people who contribute to Estonia’s development.

“If the past 85 years have taught us anything, it's that the world can change beyond all recognition. The years and decades ahead will probably teach us even more about how difficult it is to predict the future. But perhaps predicting the future is not our most important task. Our task is to help shape it,” said Mari Avarmaa, Dean of the TalTech School of Business and Governance.

The School’s history has been shaped by several generations of students, academic staff, researchers and employees. Today, more than 2,500 students are enrolled at the School, and 258 people are employed there. Its alumni community extends to nearly 30,000 people across 87 countries. The international reach and quality of this leading Estonian centre of expertise in economics and the social sciences is also reflected in its AMBA, EFMD and EAPAA accreditations.

The TalTech School of Business and Governance plays a unique role within a university of technology. According to Avarmaa, while technology creates opportunities, knowledge of economics, management, law and governance is needed to turn those opportunities into businesses, policies, functioning systems and a tangible impact on society.

One of the key events in the anniversary year was the TalTech Economic Vision Conference in January, where participants discussed Estonia’s future competitiveness. The School’s new degree programmes also look to the future and demonstrate its ongoing development. These include Artificial Intelligence in Business, Sustainability Management and an international master’s programme in Intellectual Property and Data Law.

According to Avarmaa, the School’s achievements are driven by individuals whose work has been recognised in Estonia and around the world. “I would like to thank all our current and former colleagues, students, alumni, and partners who have contributed to our development.
