The Department of Energy Technology at Tallinn University of Technology carried out an Erasmus+ mobility visit to the École Nationale Polytechnique (ENP) in Algiers, Algeria. The visit took place within the framework of the Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility cooperation agreement between TalTech and ENP. The main aim of the mobility was to strengthen institutional cooperation, academic exchange, and research collaboration in the fields of renewable energy, thermochemical conversion of solid fuels, hydrogen production, and sustainable engineering education.
Institutional Meetings and Cooperation Development
During the visit, the TalTech delegation was warmly welcomed by the ENP leadership, academic staff, and representatives responsible for international cooperation.
Meetings were held with Pr. Abdelouahab Mekhaldi, Director of the École Nationale Polytechnique; Dr. Iskander Zouaghi, Deputy Director for Information and Communication Systems and External Relations; Prof. Ammar Selatnia from the Department of Chemical Engineering; Sabiha Beloued, responsible for external relations; and other members of the ENP academic community.
The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between TalTech and ENP through staff and student mobility, joint supervision of MSc and PhD students, collaborative research activities, and the preparation of future international project proposals. Particular attention was given to the implementation of the Erasmus+ cooperation framework and the development of a long-term roadmap for collaboration between the two institutions.
Research and Academic Exchange
The visit included institutional meetings, technical discussions, academic presentations, and exchanges of good practices related to teaching, laboratory organisation, research management, and experimental methodologies.
The main thematic areas of cooperation discussed during the visit included renewable energy systems, thermochemical conversion of biomass and solid fuels, chemical looping processes, hydrogen production, thermal engineering, energy systems, laboratory methodologies, and digital modelling tools for energy and thermal processes.
These topics closely align with the research priorities of TalTech’s Department of Energy Technology and ENP’s engineering and research activities, creating a strong basis for future academic and scientific cooperation.
Visit to Research Facilities and CRAPC
As part of the programme, the TalTech delegation visited ENP research facilities and external research infrastructure relevant to energy, chemical engineering, and materials analysis. The delegation also visited the Centre for Scientific and Technical Research in Physico-Chemical Analysis (CRAPC), Algeria. During the visit, they were introduced to analytical facilities and research equipment, including advanced instrumentation for physico-chemical analysis.
International Academic Cooperation
The mobility supports the internationalisation strategies of both TalTech and ENP. For TalTech, the visit contributes to expanding cooperation with North Africa and strengthening its international research network in sustainable energy technologies, thermochemical conversion, and hydrogen-related research. For ENP, the cooperation supports engagement with European academic and research institutions, strengthens opportunities for staff and student mobility, and creates a platform for joint academic activities, shared laboratory practices, and future participation in international research and education projects.
A concrete next step in the cooperation is the planned mobility of ENP Master’s students to TalTech in the coming semester. This will further reinforce the Erasmus+ exchange activities between the two institutions and support the development of long-term academic links.
Both institutions expressed strong interest in continuing the collaboration and developing joint initiatives in research, education, supervision, mobility, and international project preparation.
