TalTech’s Cultural Achievement of the Year is the album “Seitsmest viieni” by the Tallinn University of Technology Wind Band. In early winter, the wind band released its first full-length recording, bringing a fresh sound to the Estonian music scene: the album features arrangements created especially for wind band, based on works by acclaimed Estonian jazz musicians.
The Tallinn University of Technology Wind Band plays an important role both within the university and in the broader development of Estonian wind music. The nearly 50-member ensemble is made up mainly of the university’s students, faculty, alumni, and former and current staff. This unique combination has helped keep the collective vibrant and creative.
The repertoire is equally diverse, ranging from dance music for ballroom settings to highly demanding symphonic wind music and classics. While in earlier years the band´s training camps and concerts also reached border regions, in recent years performances across Estonia have been fewer. Instead, greater emphasis has been placed on developing performance skills by expanding the repertoire - commissioning music from abroad as well as discovering outstanding arrangers in Estonia. In more time-critical circumstances, arrangements have also been creatively shaped by the orchestra’s principal conductor.
Although wind instruments have historically played an important role in jazz, there is relatively little jazz composed or arranged specifically for wind band. Jazz works by Estonia’s own talented composers, in particular, had remained largely unexplored in a wind-band context.
The band set out to fill this gap. The album features ten tracks by renowned Estonian jazz artists such as Kadri Voorand, Rita Ray, Robert Jürjendal, Karmen Rõivassepp, and several others. The works were arranged for the band by some of Estonia’s finest arrangers, including Ott Kask, Riivo Jõgi, Meelis Vind, and Raul Sööt. Each of them has a distinctive personal style that helped refine and enrich the orchestra’s sound.
The recognition was presented on February 27 at a ceremony in honor of Estonia’s Independence Day at TalTech.
