The renovation of the library building is entering its final month. Under the current schedule, the contractor will hand over the building at the end of October, allowing us to begin moving library materials, systems and staff back in during November. Setting everything up and obtaining an occupancy permit will also take time. We therefore hope to open the entire building to readers in early December.
“The work has revealed many unexpected issues in the floors, walls and ceilings that have needed attention. Repairs to defects from earlier construction work are now being documented in 3D models to make things easier for maintenance staff and future contractors,” said Joel Aug, project manager in the property management department. He added that, unfortunately, some defects in the current construction work have also required correction.
The library’s second floor will gain a 100-seat seminar room, individual study spaces, group study rooms and leisure areas, while the third floor will feature a brand-new staircase and a welcoming study area accessible 24/7. The building’s technical systems are also being upgraded. For example, the atrium ceiling, designed in 2009 to be maintenance-free, is being fitted with new technical solutions and a façade-cleaning system so that maintenance and glass cleaning can be carried out without scaffolding. The entrance will have a new vestibule with a canopy, and the building’s sprinkler system will be brought into line with current requirements.
The custom-made carpets with a leaf motif are ready and have been partially installed on the second floor, where furniture installation will begin soon. The bespoke furniture is also ready and awaiting delivery to the site. Assembly can begin once all the carpeting has been laid. With the carpets and furniture in place, we can start moving books and equipment back in and installing signage for the collections.
If everything goes to plan and we obtain the building’s occupancy permit, we hope to open the doors in early December. Until then, all library services remain available in the temporary service area on the building’s first floor and online.
