The Estonian–Latvian Basketball League is in full swing, and TalTech/Alexela’s next home game will be anything but ordinary – this time they will face none other than the University of Tartu Maks & Moorits team. The derby match will take place on 25 October at 17:00 in the TalTech Sports Hall.
Initiated by TalTech and now one of the highlights of the Estonian sports calendar, the University Duel is more than just a game – it’s a basketball celebration and a matter of pride between universities. The event brings together thousands of students, alumni, university staff, and sports fans from across Estonia at least twice per season.
The semi-final series held in spring broke attendance records in both arenas – can we top that number this time?
Hendrik Voll, TalTech’s Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Development and President of the Estonian Academic Sports Federation (EASL), said:
“The basketball derby between the two major universities is probably the biggest positive rivalry that currently exists in Estonian sports. What makes it special is the spirited support and the powerful yet dignified atmosphere. When you come to the game, you’ll experience something that words can hardly describe – you simply have to feel that energy yourself. See you in the arena!”
TalTech’s student organisation Juuliuse Jüngrid, known for their energetic fan spirit, has set a goal to fill the hall with a record-breaking crowd.
Starting from 15:00, Jüngrid will be offering a free grill in front of the sports hall, followed by a joint march into the arena at 16:00 to prepare for the big duel – decorating the fan stands, tuning the trumpets, and getting the energy levels sky-high.
Make sure to arrive at least an hour early to get a good seat!
At 17:00, the tip-off whistle will sound – and the true battle for university sports honour will begin.
