WHAT IS THE STUDENT PARLIAMENT?

One of the most important bodies of the student body is the 15-member Student Parliament, which consists of students from all faculties. It is the highest decision-making body of the TalTech student body, and its functions are similar to those of the national parliament. The work of the Student Parliament is divided between two committees: the Academic Committee and the Student Life Committee.

All students have the right to submit proposals and drafts to both the Parliament and its committees. Members of the Student Parliament are elected by TalTech students, who can vote for candidates running in their respective constituencies.

WHAT DOES THE STUDENT PARLIAMENT DO?

The tasks of the Student Parliament:

  • Adopts positions and decisions that concern TalTech students.
  • Defends the rights and interests of students at Tallinn University of Technology.
  • Guides projects that improve students’ study and activity opportunities.
  • Elects representatives to various university decision-making bodies, such as the university senate and the Federation of Estonian Student Unions (EÜL).
  • Elects members of the Student Union board who are responsible for the daily development of educational quality and student life.
  • Approves and provides feedback on the implementation of the Student Union's action plan.

Key topics in recent years:

  • Each year, the Student Parliament elects the board of the Student Union.
  • In October 2024, the Parliament took a stand for maintaining free higher education and participated in a demonstration.
  • Between the academic years 2021 and 2023, a mental health event was initiated, along with the development of mental health positions. What started as a one-day event has now become a full Mental Health Month every year.
  • The Student Parliament has also raised the issue of clearly defining and raising awareness of student rights, as inadequate regulation has led to unequal situations and hindered students from defending their interests.
