An introduction to metrology

Authors Rein Laaneots, Olev Mathiesen

This book contains basic and essential facts on measurement. Starting from a presentation of the metrological concepts of a quantity, its value, and the measurement unit, the authors discuss measurement as a process of experimentally determining a value that can reasonably be attributed to a quantity. Measurands are treated as stochastic variables, and a theoretical model is presented how to obtain a measurement result as an estimate of the measured quantity value together with its reliability. The latter is discussed thoroughly; in particular, measurement uncertainty and its estimation, taking into account other quantities that influence the result. In this connection, an account is given of relevant parts of mathematical statistics and the propagation of measurement uncertainty. Separate sections deal with comparison of measured quantity values and presentation of measurement results. properties of measuring instruments and their calibration and with the international metrological infrastructure. Practical use of the described methods is illustrated by numerous examples. The terminology used and the approach to measurement uncertainty are fully in line with internationally accepted recommendations.
