About
The mission of the Department of Software Science is to advance internationally and nationally relevant state of the art in research and apply it in bachelor, MSc and doctoral education in the areas of computer science, information systems, data science, artificial intelligence and cyber security with the goal to solve problems the society is facing and support sustainable development.
Studies
Computer science, information systems, data science, artificial intelligence and cyber defence are the main areas of study at the Institute of Software Science. When creating and renewing study programmes, we work in close cooperation with both the public and private sectors to ensure that study programmes are up to date and unique e-Estonia needs are covered. The Department offering with an modern and motivating environment that supports acquiring a valuable degree in every level of university education:
- 2 bachelor’s degree study programmes: Informatics, Business Information Technology;
- 5 master’s degree study programmes: Informatics, E-Governance Technologies and Services, Cybersecurity , Software Engineering, Business Information Technology;
- 1 doctoral degree study programme: Information and Communication Technology;
- 5 microdegree programmes: Framework of the digital state, Programming.
Research & Development
The purpose of the research groups at the Department of Software Science is to advance internationally and nationally relevant state of the art in research in the areas of computer science, information systems, data science, artificial intelligence and cyber defence. The research groups and laboratories are autonomous, strong and successful participants in attracting research funding and are able and willing to participate in research and innovation heavy collaboration with enterprises and the public sector, both in Estonia and abroad.
The department is organized into ten research groups:
- Applied Artificial Intelligence Group;
- Business Information Technology Group;
- Centre for Digital Forensics and Cyber Security;
- High-assurance Software Laboratory;
- Information Systems Group;
- Laboratory for Compositional Systems and Methods;
- Laboratory of Language Technology;
- Laboratory of Proactive Technologies;
- Next Gen Digital State Research Group;
- Nonlinear Control Systems Group.
Cooperation
The Department of Software Science aims to be a partner to:
- enterprises, offering research-based practical solutions via joint research and development project and co-supervision of theses on all levels of university education;
- the society and the state, as a responsible visionary and authoritative professional adviser, offering research based and practically relevant expert advice that is in accordance with the professional ethics of engineers and researchers;
- other universities and academic organisations, contributing jointly to advancing the boundaries of research and technology.

WHERE WE COME FROM?
The Department of Software Science is part of the School of Information Technologies of TalTech.
The Department of Software Science was established on 1. January 2017 in the course of university's structural reform from the Phonetics and Speech Technology, Control Systems and Software Science Laboratories of the Institute of Cybernetics plus Computer Science and Informatics Institute of Tallinn University of Technology. Some people from TUT Computer Control, Radio and Communication Engineering and Industrial Psychology Institutes also joined.
Starting November 2020 there are 11 Research Groups, Study Centre for IT Foundation and Support Unit in the Department.
