This year’s MarineHäkk will focus on ship retrofitting – a timely and rapidly evolving field that plays a vital role in enhancing the sustainability and competitiveness of the maritime sector.

What is retrofitting?

Ship retrofitting refers to the upgrading, modification, or reconfiguration of existing vessels to:

  • reduce fuel consumption,

  • extend operational life,

  • meet new regulatory requirements,

  • adopt alternative fuels,

  • improve reliability and safety,

  • or implement modern digital solutions.

This process is comparable to renovating old buildings – breathing new life into the existing and making it future-proof.

MarineHäkk: 12 Hours of Innovation

MarineHäkk brings together participants from diverse backgrounds – students, TalTech staff, maritime professionals, and enthusiasts – to collaborate intensively over 12 hours and take the first steps toward developing a new product or service.

The hackathon emphasizes teamwork, practical creativity, and early-stage innovation. Previous MarineHäkk projects have led to real-world implementation, such as TrimSense – a digital solution for optimizing vessel trim.
