Grading System
TalTech’s grading system is governed by the university’s Academic Policies. This page provides a summary of the academic assessment rules in Chapter 6. Please consult the Academic Policies for the full and current rules. If this summary differs from the current Academic Policies, the policies take precedence.
Graded assessment
TalTech uses the following grading scale:
| Grade | Description | Achievement of learning outcomes |
|---|---|---|
| A (5) | Excellent | Outstanding and exceptionally thorough achievement, with creative and highly proficient application of knowledge and skills. |
| B (4) | Very good | Very good achievement, with proficient and creative application of knowledge and skills. Minor errors may occur. |
| C (3) | Good | Good achievement, with appropriate application of knowledge and skills. Some imprecision and uncertainty may occur. |
| D (2) | Satisfactory | Sufficient achievement, with application of knowledge and skills in typical situations. Difficulties arise in unfamiliar situations. |
| E (1) | Poor | Minimum acceptable achievement of the most important learning outcomes, with limited application of knowledge and skills. |
| F (0) | Failed | Achievement below the minimum required standard. |
Grades A (5) to E (1) are passing grades. F (0) is a failing grade.
Non-graded assessment
Non-graded assessment uses a pass/fail threshold:
- A (Pass): The learning outcomes meet or exceed the required threshold.
- M (Fail): The learning outcomes do not meet the required threshold.
In non-graded assessment, A means Pass, rather than Excellent.
Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment methods, criteria, component weightings and deadlines are specified in the course’s extended syllabus. Methods and criteria must be available by the start of the course and cannot change during the semester.
Grade point average (GPA)
The GPA is an ECTS-weighted average of passed courses with graded assessment, including the graduation thesis or final examination. Each grade is multiplied by its ECTS credits; these products are added together and divided by the total ECTS credits of those courses.
