The Estonian Maritime Academy has been navigating its course for 105 years, and on November 1, this grand occasion was celebrated with honor at TalTech’s Estonian Maritime Academy in Tallinn. The evening was brought to life by the seaside festive atmosphere and nearly 350 guests – students, faculty, staff, and alumni, all gathered to partake in this event of historic and future significance for the academy.

Alumni Reunion – From Nostalgia to the Future
The evening began with an alumni reunion, rekindling memories of school years and providing an opportunity to share impressions with today’s students. University years shape every young person's life, offering moments to remember even decades later. The reunion’s most cherished aspect was the opportunity for former classmates, faculty, and alumni to reconnect. The celebration continued into the evening with emotional reunions, reminiscing, and plenty of opportunities to forge new connections.

Entertainment, Music, and Creating Traditions
The evening opened with a warm welcome from the director of the Estonian Maritime Academy, Roomet Leiger, followed by festive words from TalTech’s Rector, Professor Tiit Land, and Ergo Metsla, head of the Alumni Relations and Development Office. The event featured various entertainment, including the “Alumni Duel” – a fun competition that challenged teams to test their knowledge in maritime fields. Inspired by the popular game show “Family Feud,” this became one of the evening’s highlights. The winning team was awarded an exclusive prize – dinner on the “ship’s bridge” and a guided tour with Director Roomet Leiger, making the experience exceptionally memorable.
Recognition and Gratitude: Highlighting EMERA Values
The anniversary also marked the beginning of a new tradition – recognizing individuals and organizations who embody the core values of the Estonian Maritime Academy. This recognition program honors dedicated colleagues, alumni, and partners who have made a remarkable contribution to the academy's development and the advancement of maritime education.

The title of „Tormivari“ (Storm Shelter of the Year) was awarded to Katre Koit, Study Director, whose indispensable role at EMERA encompasses various crucial areas, from teaching to international cooperation projects.
The “Purjede Puhuja“ (The Wind in the Sails) award went to Dan Heering, who brought technological innovations and inspiration to his work, motivating both colleagues and students.
“Horisondi Avardaja ” (Expander of Horizons) went to Ulla Pirita Tapaninen, who has established a strong research team at the Estonian Maritime Academy, enhancing the academy’s international reputation.
The “Lainelööja” (Wave Maker of the Year) recognition was awarded to young alumnus Taavi Tamm, whose achievements in shipping and maritime fields, along with his commitment to inspiring the next generation, serve as a role model for the entire maritime academy community.
AS Tallinna Sadam received the “Mere(akadeemia)sõber” (Friend of the Academy) title, honoring its longstanding partnership, contributing to student training opportunities and development projects that advance both the academy and its students. Collaboration with MarineHäkk has also been a successful endeavor.
A Charitable Evening for the Future
The 105th-anniversary event was not only a celebration but also carried an important charitable purpose. All ticket proceeds will go towards scholarships for students at the Estonian Maritime Academy, supporting young students in pursuing their dreams. An auction, introduced by Development Fund Office Head Elinor Toming, allowed guests to purchase unique experiences, such as teamwork exercises in a maritime rescue operation and a trip to Tallinn Bay aboard the Sinilind. By offering these unique experiences, participants had the opportunity to contribute to the development of future mariners.
The evening culminated with a performance by the band The Swingers, featuring beloved vocalists Birgit Sarrap and Ott Lepland. Their energetic performances filled the room with joyful energy, making the evening unforgettable.
Throughout the evening, attendees were captured in a photo booth and by photographers and the KK film crew. The photo gallery offers a chance to look back and recall the evening's festive moments. We feel proud and grateful to everyone who contributed to the success of this special event.
The Estonian Maritime Academy’s anniversary was not merely a celebration but a deep expression of gratitude to those who have contributed to the academy's resilience and sustainability. We hope that each future anniversary brings new achievements and fair winds for the Estonian Maritime Academy. So we can continue to say: “Always seven feet of water under the keel, and onward with the flag of maritime education flying high!”
