DP centre
The Dynamic Positioning (DP) Centre of TalTech Estonian Maritime Academy (Kopli 101, 11712 Tallinn, ESTONIA) was accredited by the Nautical Institute in November 2021.
DP Classroom is equipped with four workplaces for maximum eight trainees and is dedicated to DP Tutor training, theoretical lectures, test and evaluation, and briefing.
DP Bridge Simulator is equipped with Navis-Transas DP Workplace and Transas-Wärtsilä full bridge equipment and dedicated to the practical sessions of the DP Simulator course.
Courses will be conducted by Mr Laurentiu Badea.
Booking, payment, cancellation policy
The course dates will be agreed once group of people indicated their interest to participate, either in DP Basic Course (1200€) or DP Simulator Course (1400€).
Once the dates have been announced, the registration is opened. Full payment of the fee ensures the place in the course. Registration closes 5 business days before the start of the course. If participant wishes to cancel their participation a penalty of 50% of the course fee will be withheld and the remaining fee will be refunded.
TalTech DP Centre reserves the right to cancel the course if less than 6 persons have registered to DP Basic and less than 4 persons to DP Simulator course.

DP Basic Course
The overall aim of the course is to provide participants with a basic understanding of Dynamic Positioning as well as the advantages and limitations of the DP control systems.
DP Basic course duration is 4 days (30 hours) and maximum number of participant is 8 per course. The price for course is 1200€.

Target group
Deck Officers, DP operator trainees and other users of DP systems who would like to start the Nautical Institute’s DP Operator Certification Scheme.
Entry requirements
- The minimum qualification is set at STCW Regulation II/1 – II/2 – II/3 Deck
- Official approval form the Nautical Institute to attend the course for Marine Vocational Qualification; or
- The proof that the DP Candidate are on STCW training for Officer Trainees.
Learning process and assessment
The course is a combination of theoretical lessons (at least 80%) and practical (simulator) exercises (20%). During the course each participant will have access to a DP tutor operator station with generic DP software. Practical training takes place in a simulated full navigation bridge comprising radar, conning and ECDIS consoles, as well as 3 DP control consoles (master, slave and conning).
The course didactic materials are written in English and the course will be held in English unless otherwise agreed.
In order to be awarded a certificate of completion for the DP Basic Course the online assessment at the training centre must be passed. The exam is composed of multiple choice questions and shall be completed in 1 hour 15 minutes.
The online assessment consists of 40 questions and shall be completed with a pass mark of 70%.
Certificate
The DP Basic course is the first phase of the Nautical Institute DP Operator Certification Scheme.
On successful completion of the DP Basic Course and online assessment, the Certificate of DP Basic Course and Nautical Institute Dynamic Positioning Operator’s logbook, in which courses, DP sea time, task completion and Statement of Suitability as a DPO are recorded, are issued.
Course complies with STCW Part B V/f – Guidance on the Training and Experience for Personnel Operating Dynamic Positioning Systems.
DP Simulator Course
The overall aim of the course is to provide participants with further insight, experience and confidence in performing offshore operations under DP control.
DP Simulator Course duration is 4 days (30 hours) and maximum number of participants is 4. The price for course is 1400€.

Objectives and timetable
- Carry out operational planning, risk assessment and hazard identification tasks;
- Set up the DP system for a particular task;
- Operate the communications;
- Analyse the trends; discuss systems failures;
- Decide on courses of action because of systems failures;
- React to alarms and printer readout;
- Initiate DP Alert status alarms;
- React to all events occurring;
- Operate the desk under normal and pressured conditions;
- Practice effective teamwork;
- Apply the lessons learned to date.
Target group
Navigators who have successfully completed phase 1 (DP Basic Course) and phase 2 (60 days documented seagoing familiarisation on a DP capable vessel.
Entry requirements
- DP Basic Course AND 60 days documented seagoing familiarisation on a DP capable vessel
- No more than 5 years between DP Basic Course and DP Simulator Course
Learning process and assessment
The training sessions are intended to build on experience, and to provide realistic DP-based scenario work on TRANSAS Simulators.
The course didactic materials are written in English and the course will be held in English unless otherwise agreed.
In order to be awarded a certificate of completion for the Simulator Course the trainee must pass an online assessment and practical assessment.
The online assessment consists of 30 questions and shall be completed in one hour with a pass mark of 70%.
In the practical assessment, each candidate is required to demonstrate their competence to perform the tasks listed in the DP set-up Practical Assessment Table.
Certificate
A certificate accredited by the Nautical Institute will be issued on successful completion of the course.
By completing the Offshore training scheme within five years the DP Operator may receive one of the 3 types of DP Certificate:
- Unlimited Certificate: for training completed on board vessels classed DP 1/2/3 where at least 60 DP sea time days have been completed on vessels of DP Class 2 or 3.
- Limited Certificate: for training completed on board vessels classed DP1/2/3 where less than 60 DP sea time days have been completed on vessels of DP Class 2 or 3.
- Restricted to Unclassed vessels: for training completed on board vessels of Unclassed DP, DP Class 0 or a mix of experience on board classed and Unclassed vessels where insufficient time has been completed to be eligible for one of the other certificates.
