SEAMAN’S MEDICAL CERTIFICATE

Medical check-ups directed at seamen are passed twice during studies by the navigation and ship engineering students. More precise information is forwarded prior to the internship period.

Documents required


1. Basic Safety Training (STCW Code A-VI/1 § 1 except § 1.7. A-VI/1 § 2 Table A-VI/1-1, A-VI/1-2,A-VI/1-3,A-VI/1-4) – consists of 4 parts, of which 2 are completed at the academy, 2 at Reval Safety Training:

  • Elementary first aid – completed at the academy

  • Personal safety and social responsibilities – completed at the academy

  • Personal survival techniques – completed at Reval Safety Training

  • Basic Fire Fighting – completed at Reva Safety Training

2. Competency in Security Awareness (STCW Code A-VI/6-1 § 4) – completed at the academy.
3. Seaman’s medical certificate – the academy directs to a medical check-up to obtain the certificate.
4. Seaman’s certificate (OS)
5. If going under the presence of a foreign flag, then also the seaman’s passport.


 Required for obtaining an able seaman’s certificate are:
1) training of an able seaman or seaman’s certificate;
2) minimally two months of marine navigation recorded in the internship diary as a seaman on a ship with a gross tonnage of 200 or more or on a training ship or in the absence of an internship diary six months marine navigation experience as a seaman on a ship with a gross tonnage of 200 or more or on a training ship.


Required for obtaining a senior seaman’s certificate are:
1) an able seaman’s certificate;
2) at least 12 months marine navigation experience as an able seaman on a ship with a gross tonnage of 500 or more;
3) completion of a safety means and survival craft coxswain course at a maritime educational institution

Required for obtaining a watch officer certificate of a ship with a gross tonnage of 500 or more are:
1) training of a watch officer for a ship with a gross tonnage of 500 or more;
2) at least 12 months marine navigation experience recorded in the internship diary as a member of the deck department on a ship with a gross tonnage of 500 or more, with minimally six months as a navigational watch overseen by the deck officer.


(2) The marine navigation experience required for the diploma will not include work on a military ship or riverboat. Students studying at a maritime educational institution may have included in the marine navigation experience up to two months marine navigation experience on a military ship or training ship with a gross tonnage of 100 or more.


(3) A confirmation of 36 months marine navigation experience as a member of the deck department on a ship with a gross tonnage of at least 500 must be presented. If the person does not have a confirmation of marine navigation experience recorded correctly according to the maritime educational institution. At least six months of the experience must be as a navigational watch overseen by the deck officer. If the length of experience recorded in the internship diary is less than 12 months, then in order to obtain the diploma a confirmation of marine navigational experience must be presented for the missing part in threefold the missing time.

Applying for the engineer’s certificate requires the completion of at least a 2 month marine navigation internship with internship diary (the required confirmation concerning that will be issued by the academy to the Maritime Administration) or 6 months of marine navigation experience in the engine room (without internship diary), with the effective power of main engines 200 kW or more.

Obtaining the senior engineer’s certificate requires at least 6 months marine navigation experience as an engineer, on a ship with main engines with an effective power of 750 kW or more.

Applicants for a refrigeration equipment engineer certificate must have at least 2 months experience servicing refrigeration equipment.

5. If going under the presence of a foreign flag, then also the seaman’s passport.

Required for obtaining the diploma of a duty engineer for a motor ship with main engines with an effective total power of 750 kW or more are:
1) training for a duty engineer of a motor ship with an effective total power of 750 kW or more;
2) at least for months of practical training in a ship repair company or a maritime education institution’s mechanic workshop;
3) at least eight months experience, recorded in the internship diary, in marine navigation, in the engine room of a ship with main engines with an effective total power of 750 kW or more, of which at least six months as the engineering watch under the guidance of the marine engineer.

(2) The marine navigation experience required for the diploma will not include work on a military ship or riverboat. Students studying at a maritime educational institution may have included in the marine navigation experience up to two months marine navigation experience on a military ship or training ship with main engines with an effective total power of 200 kW or more.

(3) A confirmation of at least six months experience in a ship repair company or mechanic workshop and 30 months of marine navigation experience in the engine room of a ship with main engines with an effective total power of 750 kW or more must be presented, if the person does not have a confirmation of marine navigation experience recorded correctly according to the maritime educational institution. At least six months of the experience must be as the engineering watch overseen by the marine engineer.

(4) A confirmation of at least 24 months of marine navigation experience, on a ship with main engines with an effective total power of 750 kW or more, must be presented, in case the person does not have a confirmation of marine navigation experience recorded correctly according to the maritime education institution. At least six months of the experience must be as the engineering watch overseen by the marine engineer. The requirement in section 1 point 2 must also be fulfilled.

(5) If the length of experience recorded in the internship diary is less than 8 months, then in order to obtain the diploma a confirmation of marine navigational experience must be presented for the missing part in threefold the missing time.

Required for obtaining the diploma of a ship’s refrigeration equipment engineer are:
1) training as a ship’s refrigeration equipment engineer;
2) at least three months of experience in repairing refrigeration equipment, recorded in the internship diary, in a ship repair company or other shore company;
3) at least nine months marine navigation experience recorded in the internship diary, in servicing refrigeration equipment on board a ship with refrigeration equipment having cooling production of 70 000 kcal/t (81.5 kW) or more.
