Tallinn University of Technology

Andreia’s journey to TalTech started nearly 11,000 kilometers away in Brazil – a place known for sunshine, energy, and openness. So what brings someone from there to Estonia, where winter is real and systems matter?

For Andreia, the answer is simple: curiosity about how the world works – and the opportunity to turn that curiosity into real knowledge and real solutions. After completing her Bachelor’s in Chemical Engineering at the Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG), she chose to continue with a Master’s in Industrial Engineering and Management at TalTech.

Today, she combines her background in chemical engineering with a growing interest in how complex systems, industries, and people work together – building both her expertise and her life in a very different environment.

Please introduce yourself

My name is Andreia, and I am currently studying MSc in Industrial Engineering and Management. Back in Brazil, I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering at the Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG) in Brazil.

What played key role in shaping your interest towards engineering? What area of engineering do you like the most?

A show called Beakman’s World and a curiosity about how the world works were the main reasons. I’ve always been fascinated by how materials are transformed into products, the role nature plays in these processes, and how scientific advances have shaped humanity. I particularly enjoy Chemical Engineering because of its versatility and the broad range of topics it covers.

Where did you first hear about TalTech and what motivated you to come to TalTech in Estonia?

I discovered TalTech through the Study in Estonia portal, which helped me realize it was the right fit for my goals. My priority when I arrived in Estonia was to find a job first. During that time, I came across an opportunity to work as a research engineer in the science department, which I decided to pursue. After spending some time in Estonia and once my life became more stable, I eventually started my studies at TalTech.

What was a life like before coming to Estonia?

Definitely sunnier and warmer! Life in Brazil was vibrant, and while I miss the food and people, I have no complaints about the transition.

What were your expectations before coming to Estonia? Have they been met?

I expected it to be freezing cold, and Estonia definitely delivered! However, I was pleasantly surprised by how beautiful spring and summer are. I also didn't expect the city’s public mobility to be so nice, getting around is efficient.

What do you think about your study programme?

I really appreciate how the programme focuses on the practical aspects of industrial engineering. A major highlight for me is flexibility, which allows me to balance my studies with work. Additionally, the mix of international and local students creates a great environment for cultural exchange and helps with integration.

How is student life? Is there a large/active Brazilian community in Estonia?

Student life is engaging, and yes, there is a relatively large and active Brazilian community here. It’s great because you can always find someone to help you navigate local life without losing your connection to Brazilian culture.

Would you recommend taking a similar step to others, and why?

Definitely. If you have the opportunity, take it. Estonia might not be the most "obvious" European destination, but it offers a unique blend of history, nature, and a relaxed pace of life. It’s rare to live in a capital city that feels so peaceful and connected to the outdoors.

What are your future plans?

My goal is to integrate my previous experience with the knowledge I’ve gained at TalTech. I’ve realized how much I enjoy the human side of engineering, so I’d love to share such knowledge with others. Whether it’s helping other internationals adjust to Estonia or guiding junior colleagues in the workplace, I want to give back to the community that has welcomed me.

The citizens of Brazil can apply to TalTech international study programmes until April 1, 2026.  See more on admissions process and study programmes here: taltech.ee/admissions
