When Pauline arrived at TalTech, she was looking for something entirely new. With a bachelor's degree in International Relations and a growing interest in technology and security, the French-American student wanted to develop practical digital skills that would complement her existing expertise. TalTech's MSc in E-Governance Technologies and Services offered exactly that opportunity.
Over the course of an intensive year, she explored the intersection of technology, politics, law, and innovation while gaining hands-on experience through an internship at the International Centre for Defence and Security. Along the way, she also discovered Estonia's digital society, vibrant student life, and unique natural landscapes. We spoke with Pauline about her experience at TalTech, what surprised her most about Estonia, and how her studies are shaping the next step in her academic journey.
Please introduce yourself
Hi, my name is Pauline, I am 23 years old and I am Franco-American.
Where did you first hear about TalTech and why did you decide to study here? Have you thought of studying elsewhere too?
I first heard about TalTech through a friend studying at the University of Tartu, who mentioned the one‑year MSc in E‑Governance Technologies and Services. Coming from a Bachelor’s in International Relations with a strong interest in European defence and technology, I wanted to develop concrete technological skills. This programme felt like the perfect bridge between my background and my professional goals. I also considered studying at Tartu University, but TalTech’s programme aligned more closely with what I was looking for.
What were your expectations about studying in Estonia? Have they been met?
I didn’t arrive with many expectations, though I imagined the academic environment might be stricter. Instead, I found the programme to be very flexible and supportive, which I appreciated.
Why did you decide to study E-Governance Technologies and Services MSc and what do you think about the study programme today?
I wanted to study something completely different than what I had studied previously and something that would help me gain a different set of skills, still relevant to the field of international relations and security. I think this degree in E-Governance taught me exactly that. I love that it brings in elements from so many different disciplines including politics, law, IT, economics, psychology, sustainability etc.
Where could a graduate of this study programme work in future?
Truly anywhere. One of the strengths of the programme is how diverse the student cohort is, people come from many backgrounds and go on to very different paths. I think graduates can work across the public and private sectors, in government, consulting, academia, or the tech and innovation ecosystem.
How would you compare your experience of studying bachelor’s programme in another country to doing master’s degree in Estonia now?
I really enjoyed my master’s experience in Estonia. The flexibility of the programme stood out, and I appreciated that it was a one‑year degree, which made it both intensive and efficient.
How is student life at TalTech and in Tallinn overall? Are there extracurricular activities, internships, student clubs or professional networking possibilities?
Student life at TalTech is very dynamic and full of opportunities. Alongside my studies, I completed an internship at the International Centre for Defence and Security in Tallinn, which added a strong professional dimension to my year and connected my academic work to real policy challenges. I also appreciated the many networking opportunities, especially the possibility to attend events. Through the sports club course, I attended basketball and volleyball games, the school spirit was such a fun and unexpected part of the experience. I also highly recommend the first TalTech party of the year which was a highlight!
What has been the most unexpected, positive, or funny experience you’ve had with Estonians while living here so far?
The most unexpectedly positive aspect has been how genuinely good‑intentioned people are. Estonians are often described as reserved, and while that’s true at first, once you start talking to them, they are incredibly intentional, thoughtful, and sincere. It has been a wonderful surprise.
What do you miss the most back in France?
The bread. Estonia has great bread of its own, but nothing replaces French bread.
Would you recommend other students from France to take a similar step to study at TalTech? Why?
France has a lot to learn from Estonia’s digital leadership. Studying here is also a great way to discover the Baltic region, culture, and identity. I discovered the history, the beautiful cities, and the unique atmosphere that makes this part of Europe so compelling. Tallinn in particular is such an exciting and fast‑growing city with a vibrant food and coffee scene, great wine bars, and an impressive number of cultural events throughout the year. The Tallinn restaurant week is a must to try all the cool food the city has to offer!
Living in Estonia also allowed me to experience the winter magic, from winter sports to seeing the northern lights, and to explore the country’s extraordinary nature, especially the bogs and national parks. I got to experience one of the coolest things ever, seeing snow on a beach for the first time! I also loved swimming in the bog at sunset and quickly dipping in the water after going to the sauna by the sea. I loved how easy it was to travel to Finland and other Baltic countries, which made the year feel even more international and dynamic.
What are your plans after graduating?
I will return to France to continue my studies with a Master’s in International Security at Sciences Po Paris.
