Tallinn University of Technology

PhD studies

Do you want to dedicate yourself to research in creating smart and energy-efficient environments or on the topic of sustainable valorisation of natural resources? Apply for doctoral studies in the speciality of chemical, materials and energy technology in the field of engineering sciences!

The Department of Energy Technology offers doctoral studies, which include following themes:

  • Smart district heating (DH) solutions, including energy cascades, low-temperature DH, flexible and diverse energy production.
  • Expanding the critical raw material resource base through sustainable valorisation of natural resources and circular economy:
    • Estonian phosphorite and graptolite shale as raw materials for phosphorus fertilisers and rare earth metals;
    • Carbon-neutral energy, including valorisation of captured CO2 and oil shale phenols, complex recycling of oil shale ash through CO2 mineralisation processes;
    • Polymer materials and textiles, including valorisation of cellulose into thermoplastic materials, development of electronic materials and carbon-neutral filter materials;
    • Wood materials, biocomposites, development of veneer-based materials.

For PhD students

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA)

Part of Horizon Europe, the MSCA are the European Union’s flagship funding programme for doctoral education and postdoctoral training of researchers.

The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions fund excellent research and innovation and equip researchers at all stages of their career with new knowledge and skills, through mobility across borders and exposure to different sectors and disciplines. The MSCA help build Europe’s capacity for research and innovation by investing in the long-term careers of excellent researchers.

The MSCA also fund the development of excellent doctoral and postdoctoral training programmes and collaborative research projects worldwide. By doing so, they achieve a structuring impact on higher education institutions, research centres and non-academic organisations.

The MSCA promote excellence and set standards for high-quality researcher education and training in line with the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the recruitment of researchers.
