DIRECT CURRENT CLUB OF TALTECH (DC Club)
Connecting students, researchers and industry to shape the future of direct current technologies
The TalTech Direct Current Club (DC Club) is a student-led organization bringing together students interested in direct current technologies, power electronics and sustainable electrification. Officially established in spring 2026, the Club was created to build a stronger student community around emerging DC technologies and to connect students more closely with TalTech research and industry.
The Club provides a platform where students can learn beyond the classroom, participate in real engineering projects, meet researchers and companies working in the field, and contribute to the development and popularization of direct current technologies at TalTech.
Mission
The mission of the TalTech Direct Current Club is to build a strong student community around direct current technologies and create a link between students, researchers and industry. The Club aims to give students practical opportunities to develop their technical and professional skills while supporting research, innovation and knowledge sharing in the field of sustainable electrification.
Motivation
The transition toward renewable energy, battery storage, electric mobility and increasingly electrified buildings is creating new opportunities for direct current (DC) power systems. Many modern energy technologies, including solar photovoltaics, batteries, electric vehicles, LED lighting, and electronics, inherently operate on DC, making it an increasingly important part of future energy systems.
At the same time, students need opportunities to experience these technologies outside traditional coursework. The DC Club enables students to work alongside researchers and industry partners, turn theoretical knowledge into practical experience and become involved in real research and development activities already during their studies.
Main activities of the DC Club
- Student engineering projects – developing and testing practical solutions related to DC grids, power electronics, energy storage, electric mobility and other emerging technologies.
- Technical seminars and workshops – bringing together students, researchers and industry experts to exchange knowledge and discuss new developments.
- Company and laboratory visits – introducing students to real-world engineering, research facilities and career opportunities.
- Research involvement – helping students become involved in TalTech research projects and giving them an opportunity to work alongside researchers.
- Science and technology outreach – introducing direct current technologies to students, school pupils, companies and the wider public.
- Networking and community events – connecting students from different study programs and creating opportunities for cooperation between technical and business-oriented students.
Opportunities for students
The DC Club gives students an opportunity to:
- gain hands-on engineering experience outside regular coursework
- participate in real research and development projects
- develop their own technical or business ideas with support from TalTech researchers
- meet companies and specialists working in energy, power electronics and electrification
- find thesis topics, internships and potential future employers
- develop project management, teamwork, communication and leadership skills
- represent their projects at conferences, exhibitions and public events
Students from all study programs and levels of study are welcome. The Club brings together people with backgrounds ranging from electrical engineering and electronics to software development, mechanical engineering and business.
From research to real-world solutions
One of the central ideas of the DC Club is to give students an opportunity to participate in the complete development process - from an initial idea and scientific research to a working prototype and potential real-world application.
Club members can join existing projects or initiate new ones together with other students and TalTech researchers. This creates an environment where education, research and entrepreneurship can meet within the same project.
The Club works closely with the TalTech Power Electronics Group and activities around the i³DC Initiative and TalTech DC Innovation Hub, giving students access to an active research environment where new DC technologies are developed, tested and demonstrated.

Previous experience with DC technologies is not required. What matters most is curiosity and the willingness to learn and contribute.

DC Experience Day
The TalTech DC Experience Day is organized by the DC Club every spring and brings together students, researchers, companies and everyone interested in the future of electrification.
The 2026 DC Experience Day welcomed more than 80 participants and featured 12 presentations covering student projects, research activities, new technologies and practical applications of direct current systems. The event also gave visitors the opportunity to see working prototypes, meet project teams and discuss developments in the field directly with researchers and industry representatives.
For the DC Club, the Experience Day is one of the main annual events and an important platform for presenting student-led projects, strengthening cooperation between TalTech and industry, and growing the wider DC community.
