Tallinn University of Technology

One of the main goals of the collaboration between Tallinn University of Technology and Telia Estonia in terms of teaching and education is to provide state-of-the-art curriculums for Masters and Bachelors studies in communicative electronics (specialization – Telecommunication). In dialog with Telia Estonia, these curriculums are continuously revised, enhanced and updated as per academic and industrial needs.

At the master level, the collaboration with Telia Estonia includes (among other things):

  • Introducing (Sub)streams of the Communication Engineering specialisation such as Networks, 5G, IoT.
  • Subjects linked to Thomas Johann Seebeck Department of Electronics' research activities (e.g. Body Area Networks, System Aspects in Communication).
  • Guest lectures by Telia Estonia - application insights in different subjects (network technologies, development of network services, IoT).

At the bachelor level, based on new joint programme with Computer Systems, the collaboration with Telia Estonia includes (among other things):

  • Lectures/visits as part of “motivation” subject (Introduction to Specialisations) in the beginning of the 1st semester.
  • Providing perspective to studies and guidance in choosing specialization.
  • Special (elective) subjects in the curriculum - defining/reviewing the needs.

Projects, thesis topics, and competitions will involve the students, faculty members, and Telia Estonia's staff in order to promote this field of study and so that our graduates are best prepared for the job market.

The collaboration with Telia Estonia in terms of research and development (R&D) emcompasses several topics related to state-of-the-art telecommunication technologies, services, and business opportunities. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Enabling applications for cellular Internet of Things (IoT) technologies (standard compliant and beyond), including effectiveness and acheivable performance evaluation.
  • Research on 5G ultra reliable low latency – challenges related to medium access control design.
  • Critical communication systems design (LTE-Direct).
  • Wearable Wireless Networks – (BAN technologies).
  • Design and development of low-power sensor platforms/architectures.

A prime example thereof is the deployment of cellular IoT communication technologies (NB-IoT, CAT M1) on the premises of Tallinn University of Technology and further connected to Telia Estonia's infrastructure.

The deployment seeks to deploy, test, and evaluate the above technologies' performance in various scenarios (indoor, outdoor, underground/basements, etc.) For this, up-to 50 sensors are to deployed and connected to Cumulocity backend; the latter allows performing data analytics as well as interference prediction. 1 postdoc, 1 PhD student, and 1 MSc student from Tallinn University of Technology are involved; they work in close collaboration with Telia Estonia's staff.
